Leftist rebels released on Wednesday a soldier whom they kidnapped and held captive for almost a month in southern Philippines, a military official said.

Capt. Ernest Carolina, spokesman of the Philippine Army's 10th Infantry Division, said the leftist rebel group New People's Army (NPA) freed Sgt. Jeric Curay at Casoon village, Monkayo town in Compostela Valley province at Wednesday noon.

He said Curay was released after Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte negotiated for his freedom.

Curay was kidnapped by NPA guerrillas on April 4 at a rebel checkpoint in Andap village, Laak town in Compostela Valley province.

Carolina said Curay will undergo physical and psychological stress debriefing in Camp Panacan Station Hospital in Davao City.
