Authority of the Nigerian the Defense Headquarters (DHQ) on Tuesday appealed for public understanding over the traffic on Nyanya-Abuja highway, saying it was not meant to inconvenience road users.

In a statement, Major General Chris Olukolade, the defense spokesperson, said the traffic gridlock on the highway was due to the ongoing checking of vehicles coming into the city center from that route.

He said this had generated reactions and complaints from road users and the general public.

According to the military spokesperson, the actions are necessitated by the emerging security threats facing the nation which calls for support and understanding of the populace.

He added that the security measures will be reviewed as more equipment and additional support are introduced to ease the gridlock.

Olukolade appealed to members of the public to bear with the temporary measure which was in the overall best interest of the public.

Nigeria has been rocked by a series of attacks this week, including a bombing at a crowded bus station in capital Abuja last Monday that left at least 75 people dead.

The Boko Haram sect on Saturday claimed responsibility for this deadly explosion.

Abubakar Shekau, the leader of Boko Haram which has been responsible for major killings in Nigeria since 2009, said in a video message that the network was behind the bomb attack in Abuja.

"We are the ones who carried out the attack in Abuja," Shekau said.

Proved to be the biggest security challenge in the West African country, Boko Haram seeks to enshrine the Islamic Sharia law into the constitution and declared war against Western education.
