A 7-year-old boy who was locked in his room died in a fire Tuesday afternoon in Pudong New Area, local media reported Wednesday.

The Shandong Province boy's mother had locked him in the rented room before she went next door. The landlord attempted to rescue the boy, but couldn't get past the flames.

The boy was dead when firefighters found him. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
