China's Central Military Commission (CMC) has called for tightened military secrecy amid an "austere and complicated" situation.

The secrecy is to ensure that the Chinese army is capable of joining a war and winning, said a report in the Wednesday edition of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Daily, quoting a CMC document approved by President Xi Jinping.

The document called on Chinese military staff to have a clear understanding of the austere and complicated situation facing the protection of military secrecy, to always remain sober-minded and to spare no effort to keep secrets safe.

The military's sense of responsibility and awareness of its adversaries should be promoted, the document said.

It required a special check-up and overhaul to fix loopholes in the management of documents and items carrying classified information as well as secret sites and activities.

With the development of various communications techniques, administrative and technical measures should be taken to ensure the security of military information, it said.

The PLA Daily also said in a commentary on Wednesday that military secrecy is crucial to the army's survival, development and battle outcomes.
