Vietnamese PM asks to take urgent action to control measles outbreaks

Vietnamese prime minister on Wednesday instructed relevant ministries and agencies to take urgent and drastic measures to control measles outbreaks in the country and minimize the fatalities.

Dung made the instruction during a working session with ministries and agencies on Wednesday in Vietnam's capital Hanoi in the context of complicated measles outbreaks recently in the country.

According to Vietnam's Ministry of Health, measles have been detected in 61 out of 63 provinces and cities across Vietnam. As of April 23, there were nearly 3,570 measles infected cases, with 37 percent among those was in capital Hanoi.

The health ministry said children under 10 years old accounted for over 68 percent of patients, and up to 86.4 percent of the infected cases are not vaccinated against measles or unclear about vaccination situation, while only 9.9 percent had acquired one shot of vaccine while at least two doses are required, reported Vietnam's state-run news agency.

So far, the disease has killed 25 children, however, the number of fatalities caused by measles complications was reported at 108 cases in only three big hospitals in capital Hanoi.

Though the new infected cases have reduced, the Vietnamese prime minister also asked the ministry of health and localities nationwide to implement measures to reduce cross infection and to increase the rate of measles vaccination.
