Chilean Foreign Minister Heraldo Munoz and his visiting Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov Wednesday denied their meeting aimed to send a signal to the United States amid rising tensions over the Ukraine crisis.

Lavrov, who is on a tour to Latin America, said his meeting with Chile's President Michelle Bachelet and Munoz was unrelated to the conflict in the Ukraine, where pro-Russian activists and government forces are in conflict.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Lavrov decried the logic that "if someone is an ally of the United States, they cannot at the same time be associated with another country."

Munoz said both sides exchanged opinions "on topics that concern the United Nations Security Council, in particular the situation in Ukraine, given that Chile is a non-permanent member (of the body) this year and next."

"We very much value the Russian Federation's perspective on the issue, and we have listened firsthand to its points of view, which will be very useful to Chile's participation on the Security Council," added Munoz.

Munoz said Chile maintained "an independent foreign policy," adding the country's ties with the United States were "excellent" and "with the Russian Federation we likewise have very good ties, and our aim is to deepen them, as the foreign minister's visit conveys."

"There is no contradiction between these two things," said Munoz.

In March, Chile voted in favor of a united Ukraine at a UN General Assembly meeting.
