A military airfield in Beijing has reportedly enlisted two monkeys to remove birds' nests built in the area to reduce the number of migrating flocks crossing flight paths around the base.

Soldiers at the Beijing Military Area Command Air Force base explained they trained two monkeys to remove nests built high up in trees surrounding the airfield not only to reduce risk of injury, but also to prevent birds from rebuilding in the same spot.

"After monkeys dismantle a nest, birds do not build it again because the monkey leaves its scent that scares the birds," explained head of the nest removal team, surnamed Su.

He added the base is located along one of the eight largest migration routes in the world.

Birds fly into the area every March to build their nests, which increase incidents of bird strikes, or collisions of airborne animals and aircraft.

According to the report, one monkey can dismantle up to eight nests a day.

The duo has removed nearly 200 nests since they completed training earlier this year.
