Romance stories between men and women have long been the source of many hit films in the movie industry. The successes of recent romance films One Night Surprise, My Lucky Star, and The Stolen Years show that films tailored for the female audience can take a leading role in the industry. However, men are no longer the only thing attracting the attention of women.

The recent prevalent use of guimi, a Chinese term that women use to refer to their female best friends, has pushed friendship between women into the spotlight.

Instead of focusing on romantic love, Hong Kong director Barbara Wong has chosen to focus on the close friendships that exist between women in her latest film Girls.

As a female director, Wong's films usually focus on telling stories about women. Her works Women's Private Parts, Wonder Women and The Stolen Years have all been very well received.

In a press release for the film she revealed that she always wanted to make a film entirely about women, explaining that while this type of movie is already well developed in Hollywood things are still a blank slate in the domestic movie industry. This vacuum was one of the reasons behind her decision to film Girls.

In her opinion, although the interaction between men and women can be charming, she feels that the way women support each other, overcome difficulties together, and how they fall out and still end up being able to reconcile with each other is even more interesting. She hopes by watching her film men can come to understand the complicated emotions that exist between women, which might help them come to terms with how women are able to mock each other, yet still stand together when they fall upon hard times.

The film stars actresses Ivy Chan, Fiona Fit and Yang Zishan and actors Shawn Yue, Wallace Chung and Vanness Wu.
