Wan Zhao, a New York dancer and actress, says a prayer for her ancestors on the tracks they helped build. The trails connected the industrial east and resource-bountiful west for the first time on May 10, 1869 after nearly five years' construction. They reduced a trip that used to take six months by wagon to only six days.

Locomotive

Locomotive "No 119" makes its way into place. More than 11,000 Chinese migrant workers built the tracks, and their contribution, said New York City photographer Corky Lee, is "a neglected and forgotten" piece of American history.
