Three security personnel were killed and eight civilians wounded in two attacks in eastern Afghan province of Ghazni on Tuesday, sources said.

In one attack, eight civilians were wounded as two Taliban rockets hit the provincial capital of Ghazni city.

"Eight wounded civilians were admitted to the Ghazni hospital at around 11:30 am local time. They were wounded by rocket shrapnel," the provincial health department director Baz Mohammad Hemat told Xinhua, adding that three of them got life-threatening wounds.

Earlier on Tuesday, a senior intelligence official and two police were killed when an improvised explosive device (IED) struck a police vehicle in Zana Khan district.

The attacks came one day after the Taliban rebels started an annual spring offensive.

On Monday, the militants launched multiple attacks across the country, killing 20 people and injuring two dozen others. Majority of the victims were civilians.

More than 2,900 civilians were killed and nearly 5,700 wounded in conflicts and Taliban-led attacks in the war-torn country last year, according to official figures.
