Four chartered ships tasked with evacuating Chinese nationals from riots-hit Vietnam arrived at the central Vung Ang port on Monday.

Wuzhishan, helped by Vietnamese navigators, sailed into the port in the central Ha Tinh province at 10:18 am local time (0318 GMT).

The other three Chinese ships, Baishiling, Tongguling and Zijing 12, also arrived in an area outside the port early Monday, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jianchao said. They were waiting to be allowed into the port.

The Chinese government has decided to send the ships to bring back home nearly 4,000 workers from Metallurgical Corporation of China (MCC), who were attacked in recent deadly anti-China riots.

MCC is a contractor for the construction of an iron and steel complex invested by Taiwan-based Formosa Plastics Group.

Xinhua correspondents said fine weather and low tide at the port were favorable for the Chinese workers to get aboard the ships.

A Chinese government work group was in collaboration with the Vietnamese side at the port for the evacuation.

The chartered ships were part of a massive evacuation operation to get out Chinese nationals from Vietnam following the anti-China riots.

Some 135 wounded Chinese workers in the Ha Tinh province had been flown home aboard two chartered flights on Sunday,

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, more than 3,000 Chinese nationals had been evacuated from Vietnam as of Saturday.

Protests targeting foreign companies in central and southern Vietnamese provinces turned violent Tuesday, which had left at least two Chinese dead and more than 100 injured.

The anti-China looting and arson came after Vietnamese ships and personnel repeatedly harassed the normal operations of a Chinese oil company in waters only 17 nautical miles from China's Zhongjian Island, part of Xisha Islands, in the South China Sea.
