Natural History Museum will open an exhibition of mammoths, the largest creature on the earth on Friday.

During the exhibition "Mammoths: Ice Age Giants", different species of mammoths, including the infamous woolly mammoth, the spiral-tusked Columbian mammoth and island-dwelling dwarf mammoth will be showcased.

Visitors can also watch prehistoric giants such as the American mastodons, sabre-tooth cat, which was one of the most successful predators of mammoths and short-faced bears.

Among the mammoths, a rare baby woolly mammoth Lyuba from northern Russia will make her debut in Western Europe. With the height of 130 centimeters and weighs 50 kilograms, the baby mammoth was only one-month old when she died.

Lyuba's body was buried in wet clay and mud which then froze, preserving it until she was found by reindeer herders in 2007.

"She is the most complete mammoth ever found. It is very interesting that she still got her skin and flesh even her internal organs because she was frozen in the permafrost for 42,000 years," said Victoria Herridge, researcher of earth sciences.

"We are worried about the world warming up and the ice sheets melting. The animals we see here today in the museum, most of them are now completely extinct at the end of the last ice age. By understanding how that extinction happened and whether it was connected to the changing climate could help us understand how animals and humans might respond to the climate change today," she added.

Besides face-to-face show of the titans, visitors will be able to try out the life as a mammoth by jousting with tusks, moving trunks and feeling the weight of the food a mammoth ate each day, which equivalent to 230 bags of sugar.

The exhibition will be on display from May 23 to September 7.
