Surveys on presidential elections recently carried out by prominent pollster agencies in Indonesia put candidate pairing, nominated by coalition of Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Joko Widodo-Jusuf Kalla leads significantly compared to their arch-rival candidates.

The pairing of Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo and former vice president Jusuf Kalla is even dominating in five out of seven provinces considered as "real battle ground" in the upcoming elections, according to results of the latest survey carried out by Indonesia Circle Survey (LSI)

According to the survey results, Joko Widodo, popularly called with his nickname Jokowi, and Jusuf Kalla will prevail in provinces of West Java, East Java, Central Java, South Sulawesi and North Sumatra.

Meanwhile, their arch-rival candidate from Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) coalition Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Radjasa would only win in the capital city province of Jakarta and Banten.

Those provinces held 70 percent of voters taking part in July 9 presidential election, an LSI researcher Rully Akbar said recently.

According to the survey results, Jokowi-Hatta Radjasa secured 39.06 percent votes in West Java, while Prabowo-Hatta Radjasa only gained 29.96 percent.

In PDI-P stronghold province of Central Java, Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla obtained landslide votes of 38.57 percent compared to 15.54 percent for their rivals.

Comparison of votes garnered by Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla and Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Radjasa in provinces of East Java, North Sumatra, and South Sulawesi also showed convincing figures that favor Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla, comprised of 37.71 to 21.4 percent, 48.16 to 16.38 percent and 43.75 to 19.25 percent.

The pairing of ex-army general and former key economy minister Prabowo Subianto and Hatta Radjasa gained 35 percent votes in Jakarta, while Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla secured 30.66 percent.

In Banten province, Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Radjasa won 33.53 percent to Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla that only claimed 26.25 percent votes.

Another survey conducted by pollster agency of Center for Strategic Development Policy Studies (Puskaptis) in May this year resulted slight win for Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla pairing with 43 percent votes to 40.28 percent for Prabowo-Hatta Radjasa.

Puskaptis President Director Husen Yazid said the two pairings would have equal chances to win the nation's presidency, adding that the winner would be the pairing capable to grab 16 percent " swing voters" who mostly come from middle-upper class in the society.

He, however, said despite domination of Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla in the survey, the pairing is facing the fact of decreasing popularity ahead of the election.

"The popularity reduction for Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla has been apparently seen in Java and Sumatra that held the most number of voters," He said over the weekend.

On the contrary, popularity of Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Radjasa tends to increase, he added.

According to Husen, Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla pairing is mostly favored in the nation's eastern region comprised of Sulawesi, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku and Papua. Meanwhile, their apparent rivals Prabowo Subianto and Hatta Radjasa are widely favored in Sumatra and Kalimantan.

He said densely-populated Java would be the battle ground to gain votes for both camps as they have equal chance to win the presidential election with their political machines.
