Media in Quanzhou, Fujian Province are calling for donations for a 9-month-old infant born with a tumor on his buttocks the size of a soccer ball.

Yuan Dingkang was hospitalized at the Quanzhou Women's and Children's Hospital (QWCH) on June 28, where doctors are preparing to surgically remove the pediatric teratoma, or germ cell tumor that often occur at the bottom of the spine.

Dingkang has been in the care of his grandparents ever since his mother abandoned him, leaving his father to struggle with the mounting medical bills.

According to Dingkang's grandfather Yuan Daping, he was born last September with a tumor on his rear as big as a fist.

Dingkang first underwent surgery at three days old, when doctors at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University inserted an artificial fistula to help him defecate.

"The surgery did not help and the tumor has been growing bigger and bigger," said Yuan.

Dingkang's mother abandoned him after the surgery.

As the tumor continued to grow, Yuan took Dingkang to numerous hospitals until finding QWCH, where doctors have promised to try their best.

Natives of Guizhou Province, the family arrived in Fujian as migrant workers. They are now facing about 30,000 yuan ($4,837) in medical expenses.

Yuan has received 2,200 yuan since the Quanzhou Evening News called for donations.
