Greece's Aegean Airlines joined other major European and US airliners on Wednesday in canceling flights to and from Israel over safety concerns after a rocket landed near an airport in Tel Aviv.

The Greek airline suspended flights between Athens and Tel Aviv, the second most populous city in Israel, during a spate of similar cancellations by others, including London-based Easyjet and several US airlines. It is unclear how long the suspensions will last.

Hamas, the Islamic Movement in Gaza, has fired more than 2,000 rockets toward Israel since fighting began on July 8. Several heading toward the area of Ben Gurion airport, the largest international airport in Israel, have been intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome defense system, but Tuesday's landing was the closest to the airport yet.

The vulnerability of passenger aircraft has been of international concern recently since the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in restive Ukraine last week, killing all 298 people on board.
