Unbeaten Kazakh star Gennady Golovkin stopped Australian Daniel Geale in three brutal rounds on Saturday (US time) at Madison Square Garden in New York City to retain his World Boxing Association (WBC) middleweight world title.

Golovkin, whose amateur resume included a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, improved to 30-0 with 27 knockouts.

After the bout, Golovkin said he wanted a unification bout with World Boxing Council champion Miguel Cotto - the Puerto Rican who is a longtime favorite of Garden fans.

Cotto became Puerto Rico's first four-division champion last month when he stopped Argentina's Sergio Martinez in nine rounds for the WBC middleweight belt in New York.
