A giant marionette known as the "Grandmother" is paraded through the streets of Liverpool in northwest England, on Friday. The parade, Memories of August 1914 by French theater company Royal de Luxe, features the "Grandmother," a giant "Little Girl" and her dog named "Xolo," and tells the story of the city's involvement in World War I.

Crowds line the streets of Liverpool as they await the arrival of the giant marionettes on Friday.

The Little Girl rests in Newsham Park, Liverpool.

The giant Grandmother has slept in St. George's Hall for two days, and will meet the Little Girl and her dog to tell story of life leading up to the war. The marionettes will embark on an "odyssey" which will see them wandering major city streets and sights. Throughout, the King's Regiment and Liverpool Pals will play a prominent role, and there will be a focus on how Liverpool's efforts during the war impacted the rest of the country. Photos: AFP
