An 8-year-old girl in Chongqing with 15 toes has undergone surgery to remove the extra appendages.

Doctors at Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University successfully separated and removed Xiao Yu's 5 extra toes on August 11.

Xiao Yu was also born with two extra underdeveloped fingers.

According to her mother surnamed Liu, the family did not seek medical treatment sooner due to the high cost.

"Her feet are too wide in front and we couldn't find suitable shoes for her," said Liu. "At first she wore adult sizes, but she soon grew out of them."

Doctors said the girl has a condition called oral-facial-digital syndrome, which is characterized by a variety of disorders that cause malformations in the face, oral cavity and bones.

"Her teeth began growing outward. It's affecting her speech," said Liu.

Tian Xiaofei, a doctor at the hospital, said the hospital would help arrange more surgeries for Xiao Yu in the future.

The current Guinness World Record holder for the most toes is Akshat Saxena of India with 20 toes.
