China supports the UN Security Council resolution to cut down support for extremist groups in Iraq and Syria and calls for enhanced efforts from the international community, said a Chinese envoy to the UN Friday.

China calls upon the international community to faithfully implement Resolution 2170 to strengthen its efforts to combat such terrorist groups as Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and Al Nusrah Front (ANF), Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN after the unanimous adoption of the resolution.

"Recently, ISIL and the ANF have become rampant in deliberately attacking civilians, persecuting people of other religions and ethnic groups, resulting in large casualties among innocent civilians and displacement of millions," said Liu, noting that the extremist groups have become "a serious threat to peace and security in the Middle East and the world as a whole."

The Chinese envoy called on the international community to " adopt concrete measures to cut off arms and personnel support and financing from outside to these terrorist groups", so as to stop the spread of terrorism in Iraq and other countries, as well as to maintain peace, security and stability in the Middle East and the whole world.

ISIL, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) or simply the Islamic State (IS), is an al-Qaida splinter group that has seized swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria and has forced thousands of people mainly from minority communities to flee their homes. ANF is an al-Qaida-linked extremist group fighting the Syrian government.

Liu noted that "ISIL and ANF are increasingly using internet and social media to spread terrorist propaganda video and audio products for recruitment, incitement, or plotting and executing terrorist activities or for raising fund for their terrorist activities."

"We hope that the international community will attach great importance to this issue and to enhance their cooperation on combating cyber terrorism," said he.

"China is also a victim of terrorism. We strongly oppose all forms of terrorism and will continue to actively participate in international counter-terrorism cooperation and to combat the threat of terrorism together," he added.
