The Philippine Department of Health said Wednesday that Filipino UN peacekeepers to be repatriated from Ebola-stricken Liberia will undergo a 30-day observation period when they return home.

Spokesman Lyndon Lee Suy of the department made the statement after the Armed Forces of the Philippines announced on Saturday that 115 Filipino peacekeepers in Liberia will return to the country due to the outbreak of the Ebola virus disease in West Africa.

"Just like other overseas Filipino workers who return from Ebola-hit countries, returning peacekeepers will also be monitored for 30 days," said Lee Suy.

The troops are part of some 1,000 Filipino soldiers and policemen who are serving under the UN in disaster-hit and conflict areas in Haiti, Cote d'Ivoire, East Timor and the Korean Peninsula.

The department monitors returning Filipinos from Ebola-affected countries for 30 days even if they do not exhibit symptoms. This is one of the precautionary measures adopted by the Philippine government to prevent the entry and spread of Ebola in the country.

World Health Organization data showed that as of Aug. 20, there were 1,538 confirmed Ebola cases in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria, including 884 deaths.
