A folk medicine practitioner with a history of mixing fatal concoctions stood accused of killing an apprentice with one of his treatments in Luoyang, Henan Province, media reported on Tuesday.

Hu Wanlin, 65, was charged with practicing medicine without a license after prescribing a combination of homemade medicines that resulted in the death of 22-year-old surnamed Yun in August 2013, according to court records.

Legal counsel for the victim's family sought 1.1 million yuan ($178,984) in compensation. After the 12-hour trial, the court failed to reach a verdict.

The medicine man has been implicated in similar cases in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, Shaanxi and Henan provinces since the 1990s.
