A boy rescued from a 35-meter-high ledge outside his apartment building in Yibin, Sichuan Province after he went missing for two hours on Monday told police he was hiding to avoid receiving a beating from his mother.

Twelve-year-old Xiao Kai (pseudonym) said he climbed onto the 0.5-meter-wide ledge under his apartment window to dodge punishment for not doing his homework over the recent Mid-Autumn Festival, media reported Tuesday.

Xiao Kai's mother also told police he had climbed onto the ledge from his bedroom window to avoid being beaten.

Xiao Kai refused to speak with officers at first as they attempted to talk the boy from the narrow ledge.

"As he was afraid of his mother, we told him she was not right to beat a juvenile and police will take his mother away for questioning," said a representative from the property management residential committee surnamed Yang.

Police pulled him up with a rope after his mother promised she would not hit him.

"Xiao Kai is a good yet introverted student. He was tired of suffering beatings from his mother," said Yang. Police later took the mother into custody.
