Sun Yang of China stormed to victory in the 1500m freestyle event with a time of 14 minutes 49.875 seconds on the last day of the Asian Games at Munhak Park Tae-hwan Aquatic Center.

Sun, the current world record holder, had left fellow swimmers no chance from the very beginning. He took the lead from the first 50 meter mark till the end, expanding his advantages to 5.11 second to secure a gold.

"I hadn't been worrying too much about the race. I know I'm stronger in this event. It was good to have teammate Wang Kecheng racing with me and I'm happy to see two national flags being raised up."

He dismissed earlier report which quoted him as saying that he finds the Japanese anthem ugly.

"Every athlete would wish his or her national anthem being played at the victory ceremony. I wasn't saying some are good and some are bad. There must have been misunderstanding in this."

He also praised silver medallist Kohei Yamamoto of Japan for an impressive performance.

Looking back at his performance at these Games, Sun said he was happy to get three gold medals. But he still felt a pity for missing out on the gold in men's 200m freestyle on Sunday.

The failure also cost China a total sweep of men's freestyle events as Kosuke Hagino of Japan upset Sun and the whole Chinese team to take that gold.

"I will focus on the World Championship next year in Russia. I hope I will defend my titles in my specialities of 400m, 800m and 1500m," Sun said. "And I would also try to make greater improvement in 200m and play my part for Chinese swimming."

Wang Kecheng of China overclassed home favorite Park Tae-hwan to claim a bronze. This was the only event in which Park failed to take a medal.

Park participated in four individual events and three relay events and got one silver and five bronze.

Before the Asian Games, South Korea press had dubbed the swimming competition as a clash between Park and Sun. However, a birthday cake brought by Sun to Park to celebrate his birthday, which falls on Saturday, showed the friendship between the two.

The two posed for photos with the cake and a birthday card from Sun before Sun painted Park's face with cake cream, a picture which will surely become a memory of Incheon.
