Chinese Taipei takes two golf golds at Incheon Asiad

Chinese Taipei took the gold medal of men's team golf at the Asian Games on Sunday, while its team member Pan Cheng Tsung won the individual medal at the same time.

The Chinese Taipei team, including Pan, Yu Chunan, Wang Weilun and Kao Teng, got a four-round total of 819 shots through 10-under 206.

South Korea finished second with 7-under 209 with 826 shots and Thailand played 10-under 206 for a total score of 833 shots, claiming the third place.

During the last round's competition, Chinese Taipei and South Korea were evenly matched in the first nine holes. However, the 14th hole was a crucial point in the game. The host was within just two shots of Chinese Taipei, but both Kim Namhun and Yeom Eunho, the two leading scorers for South Korea, committed double bogeys.

Kim Youngwoong of the host, also bogeyed on the same hole. Chinese Taipei escaped the hole with two birdies and a bogey. After this, the winner was all but decided.

On the individual side, Pan won gold with 17-under 271 after four rounds'competition. Kim Namhun took silver with 15-under 273 and Yu of Chinese Taipei got bronze with 12-under 276.

The 23-year-old gold medalist said after the game: "I feel absolutely great, I cannot find words to describe it. This is one of the things I've always been waiting for and I did it."

Talking about his preparation, Pan, now a student of the Washington University commented: "My preparation was just the first week of the Asian Games, but my coach prepared a strategy beforehand."

Chinese Taipei's coach Chang Weilun was satisfied with his team's performance. "Two weeks before the Asian Games, we really did well in the World Amateur Championships, where we finished the best among the Asian teams. So we knew that we were the best Asian players."

On the other hand, Thailand won women's team gold with an overall score of 538 ahead of silver medal winners South Korea with 545. Three Chinese golfers Shi Yuting, Wang Xinying and Ye Ziqi got a total of 559 shots and won the bronze.

Park Gyeol of South Korea won the gold medal for women's individual golf with a total score of 19-under 269. Budsabakorn Sukapan of Thailand came second with 17-under 271. Supamas Sangchan, also from Thailand carded 14-under 274 shots for the bronze medal.
