Sierra Leone's defense minister heads national Ebola response center

The President of the west African state of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai Koroma has restructured the Ebola emergency operational center to ensure a more robust approach to eradicate the Ebola virus in the country.

A statement issued from the President's office over the weekend, the Head of State has appointed the Minister of Defense, Major Paolo Conteh as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the newly established National Ebola Response Center (NERC).

The CEO will have full authority for the implementation of the national Ebola Response Plan and all programs pertaining to Ebola response and with other players develop a synchronization matrix that will ensure the efficient and sustained utilisation of the massive support coming into the country from diverse sources for the fight against Ebola.

Mr Paolo will also be responsible to regularly brief the president on progress being made in the Ebola fight.

The statement issued indicated "due to the diversity of the resources being provided and the intensity of the activities to be undertaken, it has become necessary to re-configure the emergency operations center into a separate entity that will have a more robust command and control structure to effectively eradicate Ebola".

The office will be located together with the United Nations Mission for Ebola Response at the premises of the Special Court for Sierra Leone at New England, west of the city of Freetown.

The president will in the main time oversee the new structure and the Ministry of Defense.

The news was welcomed by the population who think that the military should be involved in the fight of the disease taking into consideration the spread of the disease.
