Uruguayans go to the polls on Sunday to elect a successor to left-leaning President Jose Mujica and legislators to both houses of the General Assembly.

Ten presidential candidates are running for the top job in the South American country. Some 2.6 million people out of the 3.3 million population are registered voters.

The top three contenders are former President Tabare Vazquez of the ruling Broad Front party, Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou of the right-wing National Party, and Pedro Bordaberry of the conservative Colorado Party.

Opinion polls show that Vazquez and Lacalle are expected to enter a second round scheduled for Nov. 30 as no candidate will be able to get a majority on Sunday.

As for legislative elections, 30 senate seats and 99 representative seats are being contested.

The elections will put to test the country's so-called "gender quota law," which was passed in 2009 to promote the representation of women in politics by requiring parties to propose women candidates for all levels of government.

Polls will open at 8 a.m. (1100 GMT) and close at 7:30 p.m (2230 GMT).

Official results will not be announced until the end of a second count that will begin Tuesday afternoon.

The next president will take office in March for a five-year term.
