A German national, who was abducted a week ago in southwestern Nigeria, has been released, the authorities confirmed Thursday.

Ogun State police spokesperson Abimbola Oyeyemi said the hostage was "rescued" on Thursday and reunited with officials of his German company in Lagos.

He was kidnapped by unknown gunmen on Oct. 24 in the Ogbere area of the state.

Foreigner-targeted abductions are rampant in southern Nigeria.
