Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao mourned the death of Zambian President Michael Sata on Friday at the Zambian Embassy in Beijing.

Li said President Sata was a famous leader and statesman and made contributions to China-Zambia relations. Li expressed deep condolences for his death and extended sympathies to his family.

Zambia's Ambassador to China Gertrude Mwape thanked Li for traveling to the embassy.

The Zambian government said Wednesday that Sata died of an undisclosed illness in London after medical check-up. His health has been a source of concern since June when he appeared on state television looking pale.
