A court in Shaoyang county, Hunan Province recently granted a divorce to a man after he found his wife cohabitating with her female lover, media reported on Saturday.

The man surnamed Liu discovered his wife, surnamed Huang, had been intimately involved with a woman surnamed Zhang, her long-time mahjong partner.

Liu said his suspicions piqued as Huang increasingly began staying over at Zhang's house for their all-night mahjong sessions.

Enraged, Liu filed for divorce and sought 20,000 yuan ($3,272) in damages for mental anguish suffered.

Huang argued Liu began to ignore her soon after they were married.

Feeling neglected and stressed from work, Huang said she initially turned to Zhang for emotional support and that their relationship gradually became sexual, according to the report.

Interestingly, the court denied Liu's compensation claim due to lack of legal provisions.

According to China's Marriage Law, cohabitation is defined as a man and woman living together.

Because Huang was living with someone of the same gender, there was no legal basis for compensation, said the court.
