Teacher scolded for graphic abortion photos

A Beijing teacher has been reprimanded for providing second graders with anti-abortion materials containing graphic photos.

School officials at the Beijing Yucai School Tongzhou district branch have collected the over 40 newspapers handed out to students that contained an article about abortions.

The article, which appeared in the Jiating Baike Bao, a Hebei Province weekly, was brought to the school's attention by a parent surnamed Sun, who said his child was terrified by an illustrated image of a fetus clamped by forceps.

"My child told me that  a Chinese teacher gave out the paper and required all the students to read it carefully," Sun told The Beijing News on Monday.

Other photos showed a dead fetus and the severed limbs of an aborted child.

The school said that the unnamed teacher had told the students to bring the newspapers to their parents in an effort to promote awareness of the health risks of abortions.

"What she did was inappropriate. The newspaper was not suitable for children to read," said the official.

Many Net users sided with the school.

"It was wrong to show those pictures to such little children. That could scar them for life," said a Net user.

Others supported the teacher's move. "Nowadays, more young girls are seeking abortions and they should not only know about the dangerous consequences, but also have a sense of mercy and shame," said another netizen.
