A 6.7-magnitude quake jolted off eastern Indonesia on Friday, but it was not likely to cause a tsunami, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

The US Geological Survey put the quake at 6.9 magnitude with a depth of 48.2 km under seabed.

The shallow undersea quake struck at 17:10 p.m. local time ( 1010 GMT) with an epicenter of 115 km northwest Halmahera Barat of North Maluku province and with a depth of 10 km under seabed, an official of the agency told Xinhua by phone.

The intensity of the quake was felt at 3 Modified Mercally Intensity (MMI) at Talaud and Marotai and 2 to 4 MMI at Ternate, the official said.

On Nov. 15, a powerful 7.3-magnitude quake also struck off eastern Indonesia and triggered a small tsunami, according to the agency.

Indonesia is prone to quake as it lies on a vulnerable quake- hit zone called "the Pacific Ring of Fire."
