The website of a Henan-based university was hacked on Monday in response to the school's expulsion of a freshman for "forcibly" wooing a student.

Screengrabs show the Shangqiu University website homepage replaced by black text that read, "Why can't we express love? ... Someone should speak out for the student who was expelled just because he expressed his love."

The identity of the hackers remains unknown.

The student, surnamed Guo,  was expelled late last month for violating the school's ban on campus romances.

Guo ran into trouble with school authorities on October 27 for standing outside the dormitory of a female student with a bouquet of roses.

School officials said that Guo had "disturbed public order," became verbally abusive and attempted to assault teachers.
