Visiting US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Middle East Policy Matthew Spence on Friday reiterated continued US commitment in supporting the needs of the Lebanese military, al-Joumhouriya newspaper reported.

Spence held talks with Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq and Army Commander General Jean Qahwaji on Thursday to discuss the needs of the army and the security operations across Lebanon to confront the repercussions of the war raging in neighboring Syria.

According to the paper, talks reportedly focused on the military cooperation between the two countries, the situation in Lebanon, US aid to the country, and conditions of the Syrian refugees.

Spence discussed with the two officials the possibility of providing Lebanon with advanced arms under a one-billion-US-dollar grant from Saudi Arabia.

He also stressed that the United States and Lebanon are cooperating in the battle against terrorism.

Washington sought to bolster Lebanon's military by recently announcing it had delivered a new shipment of Hellfire missiles and would also supply light aircraft.

The Lebanese security forces have carried out raids in various regions across the country in recent months in search for wanted fugitives and suspected terrorists.

The Lebanese army engaged in August in five-day clashes with fundamentalist gunmen from al-Qaeda-kinked al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State, when they invaded the eastern border town of Arsal.
