Boy misdiagnosed as having live fetus inside abdomen

An ultrasound technician in Suzhou, Anhui Province has been suspended from medical practice after erroneously reporting that a 1-year-old boy was pregnant, Anhui-based Xin'an Evening News reported on Saturday.

Authorities at Suzhou Shili Hospital blamed the misdiagnosis on a computer glitch, and are "still awaiting the results of an investigation," said hospital spokesman Wu Hao.

Le Le (pseudonym) was ordered to undergo an ultrasound on January 5 after a physician noticed a swelling in the child's abdomen.

Afterwards, the unnamed technician reported the boy "had a living fetus in the uterine cavity."

"I was scared. I couldn't understand how my boy can carry another baby," said the father, Hu Yisheng.

Only after persistent questioning did the technician reluctantly "realize the mistake," said Hu.

The case drew ire online as tensions continue between patients and doctors in China.

"I've seen many doctors chatting while diagnosing patients," wrote a Sina Weibo user. "Please be more careful! What if a malignant disease was mistakenly diagnosed?" said another Net user.
