Authorities in Sichuan Province recently uncovered a endangered animal poaching ring that catered to mine owners and multimillionaires, media reported on Monday.

Mine owner Li Chengzhang, 47, and property developer He Jianling (pseudonym), 35, are among the 13 people who have been arrested for their connection to the group, according to the Sichuan Province Forest Public Security Bureau.

Eight suspects have so far been formally charged with the poaching, buying and selling of endangered animals. At least five are currently awaiting trial.

The case unfolded when Qingchuan police arrested four men on November 5 for their involvement in the killing and selling of a black bear.

Li is suspected of shooting the protected animal, then butchering and selling off the carcass in October.

Also among the group was He, who reportedly paid 26,000 yuan ($4,183) for the carcass. "After he bought the bear, he boiled and ate it," said an officer.

By searching their mobile phones, police were able to piece together the ring, which extended to the additional suspects.
