No big pay bump for civil servants

The country's government employees will only be entitled to a small pay rise as part of a State pension fund overhaul, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, said on Friday.

The actual raise on average in the monthly wages of civil servants and employees of public institutions would be about 300 yuan ($48.18) per person, Li Zhong, a spokesman for the ministry, told a news conference in Beijing.

The basic salaries of government employees would be raised while the subsidies and performance bonuses for them will be standardized, the spokesman added.

Li made the comments in response to recent media reports which claim government employees will get a pay increase of as high as 60 percent.

The revision to government employees' pay policies comes alongside the country's reform of its pension system.

Previously government employees were not required to make monthly contributions to the State pension fund, but they now have to pay 8 percent of their monthly wages to the fund.

Some civil servants who work in relatively more developed regions are likely to face a decline in their wages, as the pay rise may not be capable of fully offsetting the costs of paying into the pension fund, according to Li.

The spokesman did not reveal when the planned revision will kick into force.
