Desperate housewives busted for ketamine karaoke session

Police arrested a group of wealthy housewives in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province for enjoying a shared hobby - taking hard drugs.

A total 20 suspects were detained January 8 during a late night raid on a hotel karaoke parlor, where plainclothes policeman also recovered amounts of ketamine and other drug paraphernalia at the scene, local media reported Sunday.

All suspects later tested positive for ketamine and methylamphetamine, said police.

Sixteen of the detained suspects are women around 50 years old. Four are men.

Police described the women as idle, wealthy people with nothing to do other than occasionally take care of their grandchildren, go to beauty salons and play cards.

The group began their high-octane get-togethers last April, where one of the group brought a drug-laced beverage to a birthday celebration.

They enjoyed the intoxication so much they decided to make it a regular thing.

Their meth-fueled parties were code-worded "sports meetings" whose excesses would cost more than 4,000 ($642) yuan a person.

The Internet was awash with the regular mix of surprise and cynicism.

"There are many ways to keep from being bored, like volunteer work, painting and writing. Why did these ladies turn to drugs?" a Net user commented.

"More news about older ladies. It looks like the poor ones are more likely to do group exercise in squares while the rich ones do drugs," another Net users said.
