China on Friday voiced opposition to any country receiving the Dalai Lama and interfering in China's internal affairs in the name of issues regarding Tibet.

"The Dalai Lama is seeking foreign support to realize his political ambition, which will never succeed," said Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hong Lei at a daily press briefing.

"The Dalai Lama is a political exile who has been engaged in secessionist activities under the cloak of religion," Hong said.

US President Barack Obama welcomed the Dalai Lama on Thursday at an annual "prayer breakfast" in Washington but did not meet him directly, according to reports.

China on Monday had already slammed the possible meeting between Obama and the Dalai Lama before the event, saying it is firmly opposed to any meeting between any country's leader and the Dalai Lama "in any form."

"Issues regarding Tibet concern China's core interests and national sentiments," Hong Lei told reporters at a regular press briefing.

"We urge the US to stick to its commitments on issues regarding Tibet, and properly settle related issues with the overall interests of China-US relations in mind," Hong said Monday.
