A husband in Changchun, Jilin Province donated blood more than 150 times over the past decade in exchange for free blood transfusions for his ill wife, news portal qq.com reported on Saturday.

Xu Wenwu, 47, has officially made 147 donations since computer records began introduced in 2001, Xiao Zhenshan, Party chief of Changchun blood donation center, told  China National Radio on Sunday.

Blood donations in China often range between 200 to 400 milliliters a visit.

However, Xu donated many times before then, all for his unnamed wife who suffers from myasthenia gravis - a neuromuscular disease that requires frequent blood transfusions, Xiao said.

Donation policies in Jilin Province grant free access of blood supplies to those whose relatives give more than 10 times.

Xu's wife began showing symptoms of her disease soon after they were married. Her condition worsened over the last five years, leaving her unable to care for herself. Xu has been her caretaker ever since.

As a result of his on-call care, he has been fired from more than 30 different jobs, wrote qq.com.

"It is deeply moving to see Xu take care of his wife for so many years despite his difficulties earning a living," Xiao said.
