Austrian police busted an international counterfeiting ring and arrested two men in possession of 50,000 counterfeit euro bills, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BK) confirmed Thursday.

Police stopped a vehicle driven by the two suspects, aged 29 and 35, in the town of Poysdorf in Lower Austria, where they found the counterfeit money hidden in a car door, the Austrian Press Agency reported.

The BK said Austrian authorities were on the trail of the counterfeiting ring in question for several months, and believed the money was intended for use within Austria.

In cooperation with German authorities, two additional arrests were made in the German city of Hamburg, including that of the 38-year-old head of the operation along with an accomplice. Authorities also uncovered the counterfeiters' workshop including printer, paper and newly-printed counterfeit bills.

Authorities added three of the four suspects come from Serbia, and the fourth from Romania.

The Austrian BK said the investigations into the ring had not yet been completed, and could not yet confirm the quality of the fake bills or how many of them are already in circulation.
