China's homegrown Beidou satellite navigation system (BDS), one of the world's four leading satellite navigation systems, may soon be used in fishing vessels in Thailand, Thai officials said at an academic forum Tuesday.

Experts and officials from the Thai Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Disaster Warning Center, and the Royal Mapping Bureau attended an academic forum in Bangkok to discuss remote sensing and navigation technology and its application.

China's Wuhan Optics Valley Beidou Group Holdings Limited, which has been cooperating with the Thai government to promote its technology in the country since 2013, was the only Chinese corporation invited.

During the meeting, Chinese experts introduced BDS and its advantages. They also explained how it could be applied to fishing vessels and demonstrated how the BDS system would work on a ship.

According to the forum, Beidou's terminal could provide fishing boats more precise and convenient navigation.

Members of the Thai government said that the forum has allowed them to understand more about Beidou technology, and said it is likely that the system will be installed in Thai fishing boats in the future.

Fu Song, a professor at the School of Aerospace of Tsinghua University, told the Global Times that China's navigating technology is now mature and it would help fishermen better locate fish.

In December 2014, the Thai government ordered all fishing boats to install a vessel monitoring system to prevent Thai ships from entering other countries' waters.
