Xu Caihou was said to suffer from multiple organ failure as his cancer had spread. He was said to have died in hospital.

The name of the hospital was not immediately revealed.

Xu was put under investigation for bribery in March last year.

In October, the military procuratorate finished its investigation into Xu's case and transferred all evidence in preparation for prosecution.
