Wang Minghou (right) and wife Gao Shenghua work their fields in Tuoxiang village, Yulin, Shaanxi Province on March 17. The village is located on the Huangtu Plateau, a vast expanse of land known for its highly erodible soil. Tuoxiang villagers have been slowly abandoned their plots in search of greener pastures since the 1990s, leaving Wang and Gao, the village's last residents, with nearly 33 hectares. Wang, in his 50s, has stayed behind to till the land and raise livestock, unwilling to take his chances in the city. Gao dutifully remains by her husband's side, but admits life in the village is lonely and boring. Photo: Xinhua
