Hyped-up rivalry distorts intention of AIIB

The China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment bank (AIIB) has overcome the challenges created by the US. It has boosted our global vision as well as our confidence. But a few exaggerated comments in some media reports argued that China had "defeated" the US, and ushered the world into a new era where a divisive race between Beijing and Washington would split the world. Some Chinese people may feel a sense of satisfaction over this, but that is just absurd.

The AIIB is not a battle arena set for China and the US. On the contrary, it will bring tangible benefits to a large number of nations in Asia and Europe. A new phenomenon of wide support for it has been created. The White House opposed it, since the new bank and the interests it serves are not US-led, which finally brought about open disobedience from its allies.

The current support for establishing the AIIB has shown the validity of the old Chinese saying, "a just cause gains great support, while an unjust one gains little." It is neither a sign of a turning point of a comparison of comprehensive strength of China and the US, nor an astonishing reversal of the game between the two.

Quite a number of overseas reports commented that the US was humiliated this time. However, this country, which has a deep-rooted business culture and strong resilience, does not care too much for the embarrassment.

Washington's signal of its desire to team up with the AIIB on cooperation over co-financing projects on Monday has been widely regarded as an adjustment in its strategy, after it realized it can't win if it sticks to its opposition.

Like the US, any major power should not easily fall into either extremes of melancholy or excitement. Maintaining a core equilibrium is its own form of power.

China has long experience of being poor and weak, so we attach great value to each success. But we have to realize that there are still plenty of things for us to learn.

The media is enthusiastic about hyping the AIIB challenge to the US. Focusing on the AIIB's financial element is a bit boring, while it is easy and juicy to make a fuss about geopolitics. It is likely to attract attention, but it is contrary to the main theme of the 21st century which is peace and development.

China has no intention to restructure the world. For a rising country with heavy tasks of domestic development and neighboring diplomacies, nothing is more important for it than peace.

The establishment of the AIIB will boost China's opening-up. It should help promote mutual understanding between China and the US rather than the other way around.

The US should learn to appreciate the importance of a win-win situation instead of prioritizing its self-interest. China should be firm on its development path, while observing the endurance and flexibility of the US.
