Spain's northeastern city of Barcelona offered to host the Mobile World Congress (MWC) until 2023, five years more than the current date agreed by the city and the congress' organizers, the association GSMA.

GSMA, that represents the interests of more than 800 mobile operators and 250 companies in the mobile ecosystem, reported Wednesday they would examine the offer of Spanish authorities.

Barcelona's Mayor Xavier Trias told reporters on Wednesday that the proposal had been delivered by the end of March, trying to go ahead of other cities that could want to host the MWC as well.

The MWC 2015 is expected to have an economic impact of around 436 million euros ($471.5 million) in Barcelona and its surroundings. Some 12,000 temporary jobs were specifically created during this year edition.

According to GSMA, the MWC 2015 held in March was the biggest in the event's history. The number of visitors stood at 93,000.
