Visitors to a Beijing museum have been throwing their bones at a dinosaur skeleton in the hopes it will bring them good luck.

Coins and bills surround the glass display containing a complete lotosaurus skeleton - something that officials at the Beijing Museum of Natural History don't seem to mind.

"Most of it is 5 or 10 yuan bills and coins from kids and grown-ups … they do it for fun," a security guard at the museum told media.

"We usually don't stop them since it doesn't damage the booth or the exhibits," the guard said.

According to Chinese custom, blessing-seekers often toss money into ponds as part of a prayer to icons, though usually it occurs at temples and other religious sites.

At the museum, visitors  hurl their cash offerings at a small opening in the 5-meter glass enclosure.

Most miss their target and end up on the floor.

Among the offerings were  a used train ticket, an ID-size photo and some foreign currency.

Photos of the dinosaur went viral after they appeared on the Beijing Evening News' Sina Weibo account. 

"Some people always seem to find a small space to throw money into for blessings," posted Weibo user HannibalNg.

"Maybe they are praying to this ancient skeleton to prevent them from getting osteoporosis," posted Vista, a Chinese magazine.

First discovered in Hunan Province, the lotosaurus was an herbivore with a long sail down its back that lived between 245 and 237 million years ago.
