Chinese President Xi Jinping appealed a non-governmental communication network to explore the regional path towards security and promote mutual respect, trust and harmonious co-existence among different civilizations, regions, races and religions in Asia at a two-day non-governmental forum of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) on May 25 in Beijing.

"While enhancing cooperation among ourselves, we should also be firmly committed to cooperating with countries in other parts of the world, other regions and international organizations so as to achieve win-win outcomes for all," said Xi in his address at the forum.

The address was read by Chen Yuan, Vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Chairman of the First Annual Conference of the CICA Non-governmental Forum.

Yu Zhengsheng, Chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, put forward the idea of building a new type of Asian security partnership and establishing a sense of community of common destiny.

Yu proposed  solving security problems by enhancing economic cooperation and promoting civilization dialogue to consolidate the will of people.

The theme of the first annual conference of the non-governmental forum was "Asia in the next decade - security and development," with two plenary sessions and six round-table meetings being held over the two days. The plenary sessions were respectively themed "To promote sustainable security based on the development of Asia" and "The post-war international order and Asian security."

Topics at the six round-table meetings were "Development finance and Asian development," "One Belt, One Road and regional common development," "Establishment of energy security framework in Asia: From consensus toward actions," "Counter-terrorism situation and cooperation in Asia," "The NGO's role in building a community of common destiny in Asia," and "Promoting mutual trust in regional security, disseminating a call for peace and development - the media's role in Asian security."

Over 200 representatives attended the forum, including political figures, think tank scholars, embassy envoys, reporters and non-governmental organizations from CICA member and observer states and other countries.

Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed establishment of the CICA Non-Governmental Forum in May 2014 at the fourth CICA summit in Shanghai, with the aim of increasing the influence of the conference.

CICA, which has 26 member states, was established in 1992, and China is in its rotating chairmanship from 2014 to 2016.
