A Chinese delegation led by Admiral Sun Jianguo, Vice Chief of Staff of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA), will take part in the upcoming Shangri-La Dialogue (SLD) in Singapore later this month, a defense ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday.

During the three-day summit slated for May 29-31, Sun will elaborate on China's foreign and defense policies.

He will also detail "the Chinese military's international cooperation on global security matters, and its provision of public security products to the global community," spokesperson Yang Yujun told a press conference.

The admiral will propose initiatives on beefing up collaboration and dialogue between militaries from different countries and on jointly safeguarding regional security in the Asia-Pacific, he said.

Meetings between Sun and military leaders from other countries will also be arranged on the sidelines of the summit, Yang said.

Widely recognized as Asia-Pacific's foremost defense and security summit, the Shangri-La Dialogue brings together defense ministers, senior officials and security experts to exchange views on key issues that shape the defense and security landscape of the region.

Earlier reports quoted Singapore's defense minister Ng Eng Hen as saying that this year's SLD would focus on four key themes, namely the threat of religious extremism, dynamics between major powers, political instability in Asian countries, and trans-national challenges arising from disasters and cyber security threats.
