A 8.5 magnitude earthquake hit off west coast of Ogasawara islands on Saturday, about 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo at about 8:24 pm local time, with strong tremor felt in Tokyo, the Japanese meteorological Agency said.

The epicenter was initially detected at 27.9 degrees north latitude and 140.8 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 590 km, said the agency.

No tsunami warnings have been issued by the agency and nor immediate injuries and damage was reported.

The 8.5 magnitude quake was registered at upper 5 of Japan's seismic scale of 7 in Ogasawara Islands. Parts of Tokyo were registered at level 4.
