A Beijing subway passenger who suffered a broken leg on an overcrowded rush hour train is suing the subway operators for compensation, media reported on Tuesday.

The passenger, surnamed Shao, is seeking 54,233.19 yuan ($8,742.39) in medical fees and lost wages from the Beijing Subway Company for the injury to his right leg.

Shao told the Shijingshan District People's Court that he was being pushed by a morning rush hour crowd into a crammed Line 1 subway car on October 31, 2014 when he felt a sudden pain in his right leg. Surveillance video shows passengers removed Shao from the train at Gucheng station.

Shao was rushed to Peking University Shougang Hospital, where doctors found a fracture and ruptured ligament, which required metal plates and pins. Shao claims still cannot walk or stand for long periods of time and lost his job.

Shao blames his injury on subway employees failing to maintain order on the platform.
